Free the West Memphis 3 is a compilation album released in October 2000 by Koch Records as a benefit for the legal defense of the West Memphis Three, three men who, while teenagers in 1994, were tried and convicted of the 1993 murders of three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas. The album was organized by guitarist Danny Bland (of the bands Cat Butt, Best Kissers in the World, and the Dwarves), Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers, and Scott Parker, who served as executive producers of the project.

The first single released from His California Album, "This Time I'm Gone for Good" took Bland back into the pop Top 50 for the first time since 1964 and made the R&B top 10 in late 1973. The opening track from Dreamer, "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City", was a strong R&B hit. A version of it was released in 1978 by the hard-rock band Whitesnake, featuring the singer David Coverdale. Much later it was sampled by Kanye West on Jay-Z's hip-hop album The Blueprint (2001). Double Trouble (long version)".

West Memphis Three' spent 18 years in jail accused of killing three boys. Steven Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore found dead in 1993. Now Steven's mother Pam Hobbs wants ex-husband Terry Hobbs probed. The mother of one of three Cub Scouts killed two decades ago in the West Memphis Three case today pushed for the long-running investigation to be reopened because of crucial new evidence. Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley spent 18 years in jail accused of killing eight-year-old boys Steven Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore in West Memphis, Arkansas. Police labelled the 1993 murders ‘satanic’ because the children's naked bodies had been bound and mutilated. The three men were released in August after they were allowed to change their pleas.

The album is a benefit for, as you might expect, the West Memphis Three. These are three guys incarcerated in the late '90s, either with life sentences or on death row. The details of their conviction are quite problematic, as both the liner notes and Jello Biafra spell out at the end of "Wrong and Important.
