The Parkerilla is a 1978 live double album by Graham Parker and The Rumour. It was recorded at Winter Gardens, Bournemouth, Manchester Opera House, Apollo Theatre, Oxford and The Palladium, New York City; and mixed at Rockfield Studios, Wales. The album was recorded as a contractual obligation album as Parker had already signed with Arista and was preparing "Squeezing Out Sparks" for that label. The album was longer than a traditional record and Mercury elected to release it as a double album
Graham Parker (born 18 November 1950, Hackney, East London) is an English singer-songwriter, who is best known as the lead singer of the British band Graham Parker & the Rumour. Parker was born in Hackney, East London in 1950. He was a pupil at Chobham Secondary Modern School in Surrey. After the arrival of the Beatles, Parker and some other 12/13 year olds formed the Deepcut Three, soon renamed the Black Rockers.
In 1978, Graham Parker & the Rumour's career was on the rise in the . label, Mercury Records, for failing to give him the promotion he needed Stateside; eager to find a more suitable corporate partner, Parker opted to finish off his contract with Mercury via that time-honored form of contractual obligation filler, the double-live album.
Graham Parker & The Rumour. The Parkerilla Tracklist. 1. Lady Doctor Lyrics.
Parker and the Rumour don’t take off from their three previous albums, they clone them: the live version of Don’t Ask Me Questions offered here misses the original studio take by a mere six seconds. The only vital differences are negative. What truly makes this record a waste of time is the song selection. Parker’s last album, Stick to Me, was miserably recorded, virtually snuffing the power of the three blazing, intelligent tunes he then proceeded to rescue on-stage: Stick to Me, Soul on Ice and the magnificent Thunder and Rain. None is included on The Parkerilla - nor is Pouring It All Out, as perfect a rock & roll song as anyone has written in the Seventies, and the essence of Parker’s live dose of reality.

This album finds Parker more passionate and fiery than his studio albums and proves that the Rumour were one of the greatest 'backing bands' of the '70s and '80s, even hotter than Elvis' Attractions!. If, you've never seen Parker and the Rumour live, this reissue of the 1978 album is a decent substitue. My only complaint is the addition of the dance version of "Don't Ask Me Questions" I never liked the remixed version of this great track.
An official Graham Parker and The Rumour live album, The Parkerilla, issued in 1978, saw Parker in a creative holding pattern. Three sides were live, with no new songs and with versions of previously released songs. Side four was devoted to a "disco" remake of "Hey Lord, Don't Ask Me Questions". The Parkerilla" satisfied his contractual obligation to Mercury Records freeing him to sign with Arista. Live at Marble Arch, 1976. At The Palladium, New York, NY, 1977. The Parkerilla (1978) UK No. 14, US No. 149. Live Sparks, 1979. Live In San Francisco 1979, 2009.
