Odetta - Odetta And The Blues album flac
Odetta released her first album, Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues, in 1956. This is some two years before the beginning of the folk revival with which she is usually associated. The power of her singing seems to connect her to an earlier folk music, more elemental and raw than her late-50s and early-60s peers.

Odetta and the Blues is an album by folk singer Odetta, released in 1962. Recorded as the 1950s/1960s American folk music revival was getting underway, the album is notable for Odetta's use of a jazz band on the record. It has subsequently been re-released on CD in 1984 on Riverside/Original Blues Classics (OBCCD-509-2), Ace (509) (1993) and Legacy (354). All songs are traditional unless otherwise noted. Hard, Oh Lord" - 4:09. Believe I'll Go" - 3:05.
One of Odetta's most interesting deviations from straight folk, and one that caused a bit of contention among her more conservative contemporaries, was Odetta and the Blues, released by Riverside in 1962. Drawing from classic female blues singers like Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, and Ma Rainy, she traded in her acoustic guitar for a six-piece jazz band featuring trumpeter Buck Clayton, trombonist Vic Dickenson, clarinetist Herb Hall, pianist Dick Wellstood, bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and drummer Shep Shepherd.

I first heard this marvelous album at a "Students for a Democratic Society" fundraising party, in a cool old house in Venice, California, in late 1968. It has haunted me ever since. I've owned it on record, tape and cd, and have played it more times, I think, than nearly any other single album and I still feel just as moved and just as thrilled. Odetta's magnificent voice and spirit will live forever, even tho' this great lady passed today. Thank you, Odetta, for sharing your heart with us. Odetta and the Blues released: 1962.
