ArtScience is a reflection of the qualities and musical interests that brought this band together. Their seamless meld of contemporary jazz, hip-hop, neo-soul, pop, and rock has influenced a host of artists following in their wake. This album marks a new modus operandi: it's the first time the band has written and produced collectively. Even the two covers here were arranged by the unit. It's also a first in that there are no guest vocal cameos. The set was recorded in New Orleans over two weeks apart from the endless touring and hustling solo careers of its members
For almost a decade, Robert Glasper has been the standard-bearer for jazz music’s fusion with hip-hop, soul, and rock, turning songs like Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit and Radiohead’s Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box into kinetic electro-funk mashups

Album · 2016 · 12 Songs. Jazz pianist Robert Glasper and his fusion ensemble make an independent move on ArtScience. After guesting with Snoop Dogg and Brandy and covering Nirvana, Glasper and company wrote, performed, and produced all the tunes here. The opening This Is Not Fear blasts out blitzing post-bop improv before settling into a funk groove, showing the band’s mastery of multiple jazz styles. Casey Benjamin shines throughout, whether in laid-back R&B environments ( Thinkin Bout You ) or on disco-influenced tracks like Day to Day. ArtScience Robert Glasper Experiment.

So much of what Robert is doing takes me back to the prog-jazz era when Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Chick Corea, Jean Luc Ponty and others reigned supreme. It's the perfect blend of jazz, neo/progressive soul and even rock elements.
