The Beach Boys' new 50th Anniversary Greatest Hits: 50 Big Ones collection features the band's most popular songs, including "California Girls," "Good Vibrations," "Surfin' . The album spent 37 weeks on the Billboard chart, launching the young group known for its shimmering vocal harmonies and relaxed California style into international stardom.
By that time, the Beach Boys had recorded their first two albums, a pair of 12-track collections that added a few novelty songs to the hits they were packaged around. Also, Brian began to grow as a producer, best documented on the third Beach Boys LP, Surfer Girl. Though surf songs still dominated the album, "Catch a Wave," the title track, and especially "In My Room" presented a giant leap in songwriting, production, and group harmony - especially astonishing considering the band had been recording for barely two years. Brian's intense scrutiny of Phil Spector's famous Wall of Sound productions was paying quick dividends and revealed his intuitive, unerring depths of musical knowledge.

I've been a Beach Boys fan for a long time, and even though I was a teenager a good decade or more after the Beach Boys' real surf-music heyday, . After I got to know the Beach Boys’ sound I bought an old Jan and Dean album at a thrift store, and though I liked them, to me, they weren’t quite on the same level. After all, their biggest hit, Surf City, was a song Beach Boy Brian Wilson wrote for them. Take note, however, of a definite arc you’ll see here: the early surf songs (1961 and 1962) don’t chart or chart low, then in 1963 and ’64, they do well and almost all are Top 10. But then in 1964, the Beatles came to America, and surf music seemed to die.
20/20 is the 15th studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released on February 10, 1969. The LP was named for being their 20th overall album release. Much of it consists of outtakes from earlier albums. It reached number 3 on UK record charts and number 68 in the US. Brian Wilson was absent during most of the album's recording after admitting himself into a psychiatric hospital, requiring brothers Carl and Dennis to retrieve several outtakes he had recorded years earlier.
