In the sketch, Yakko, Wakko, and Dot learn the song (referred to as the "International Friendship Song" in the show) from Professor Otto von gescheitmeyer, a one-shot character voiced by Jim Cummings. Comedian Mel Blanc recorded a novelty Christmas song in the 1950s, "Yah Das Ist Ein Christmas Tree", which borrows the tune and concept. This was itself parodied by singer/comedian Joel Kopischke in 2005 as "Stupid Christmas Song".

O du lieber Augustin" ("Oh, you dear Augustin") is a popular Viennese song. It was presumably composed by the balladeer Marx Augustin in 1679, though written documents only date back to about 1800. In 1679, Vienna was struck by the Great Plague and Augustin was a ballad singer and bagpiper, who toured the city's inns entertaining people. The Viennese loved Augustin because of his charming humour in bitter times, and they called him Lieber Augustin (Dear Augustin).

International Music & Culture. Ach, du lieber Augustin. Songs & Rhymes From Austria. Legend has it that around 1679 during the plague one evening when Marx Augustin (1643-1685) had gotten drunk, he fell asleep on his way home. Ach, du lieber Augustin, Alles ist hin! (Chorus). Rock ist weg, Stock ist weg, Augustin liegt im Dreck. Und selbst das reiche Wien, Hin ist's wie Augustin; Weint mit mir im gleichen Sinn, Alles ist hin!
