Tchaikovsky has been friendly territory for jazz players from the start with his great self-contained tunes. The Classical Jazz Quartet - Kenny Barron on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Stefon Harris on vibraphone and marimba, and Lewis Nash on drums - takes up where the Modern Jazz Quartet of the 1950s left off. This disc was originally released as The Nutcracker Suite; it now reappears as part of a series of CJQ discs, each devoted to a different composer

As old Latin proverb says: how many people, so many tastes.
The Classical Jazz Quartet recorded Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite at Avatar Studios, New York, August 21 & 22, 2001. The quartet features Kenny Barron on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Stefon Harris on vibes/marimba and Lewis Nash on drums. Produced by Bob Belden and Suzanne Severini. This album swings like mad and is a great alternative to the Modern Jazz Quartet. I will also say that these jazz interpretations of classical music don't really work. They sound like jazz tunes not classical, but perhaps that's the whole point? I'm not sure, but whatever this is supposed to be it's great and worth acquiring as is all of their albums.
