Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album is a studio album recorded by saxophonist John Coltrane for Impulse! Records that was first released in 2018. The recordings were made in 1963 during Coltrane's Classic Quartet period and lost for decades. Both Directions at Once was recorded in Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey on March 6, 1963, by saxophonist John Coltrane and his Quartet: double bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones, and pianist McCoy Tyner.
Recorded between the '62 album "Coltrane" and the '64 album "Crescent" (both with the same band), this album fills in a hole in Coltrane's studio recordings. Plus the band was coming off a two week gig at Birdland where they were blowing minds setting a new horizon in the jazz genre, so they were really together as a group. Coltrane's bluesy minor key workouts are in evidence on this album using both tenor and soprano saxes.
One of these sessions happened at Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio on March 6, 1963, when Coltrane's quartet was in the thick of a residency at New York's Birdland and just before they were scheduled to cut an album with vocalist Johnny Hartman. Two of the original songs are untitled, their melodic themes are perhaps a shade fuzzy, the band is vigorous but loose.

After gaining popularity performing in various London underground venues, they released two best-selling albums – The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) and The Wall (1979). But it was with Wish You Were Here (1975) that their originality and experimentation really shone through. The album features Shine on Your Crazy Diamond, which is universally considered as one of their finest compositions. After promoting their new album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful in a private London show in 2015, they began a world tour, which included four performances at the amazing Alexandra Palace.
