The new album, Why Anything? Why This? has some trademark Shriekback moments, but the band continues to grow, experiment and develop. It is three albums worth of Shriekback coming back together. We were all more involved with this one than the album before last, says Carl Marsh during our recent conversation. Everyone was involved. We went back to the old days, like getting the family back together. We were all throwing things in all the time. Last year, there was a decision to get back together as a live band, which has resulted in this album which is more of a collaboration.

Shriekback are back with their 14th studio album Why Anything? Why This?. Today we are sharing the brooding barstool balled titled 37 -the closing track off of the LP, which is set for release on May 25th. Shriekback was founded in 1981 by ex-XTC keyboardist Barry Andrews and former Gang Of Four bassist Dave Allen, along with guitarist Carl Marsh. Dave Allen is not participating in this lineup, but gave his blessing to this current incarnation of the band, which now additionally features Steve Halliwell on guitar/keyboards, Mike Cozzi on guitar, Wendy and Sarah Partridge on vocals, and Scott Firth of Public Image Ltd. on bass. Previously the band’s forthcoming album saw the premiere of Catmandu, as well as featuring a music video for the track And The Rain. Tracklisting: Shovelheads.

Shriekback was formed in 1980 by ex-XTC keyboardist Barry Andrews and bassist Dave Allen on his departure from Gang Of Four, in collaboration with guitarist Carl Marsh from Out On Blue Six.

Shriekback during the recording of Oil & Gold and was replaced on guitar by Mike Cozzi, with Andrews taking over lead vocals. Shriekback also left Arista and signed to Island Records for whom they recorded the 1986 album Big Night Music, after which Allen left to rejoin Gang of Four, and Shriekback remained a collaborative centred on Andrews. Allen would also go on to play in King Swamp and The Elastic Purejoy. Marsh was also in the band Happyhead. Shriekback are still actively producing music and released a studio album in May of 2018. Music composed by Shriekback is used as the theme song for the Squaring the Strange podcast hosted by Benjamin Radford and Pascual Romero.
