Carlos Gonzalez Martinez Amon Tobin can make any sound his instrument. Odd but pleasant soundscapes from beginning to end, and more melodic that his previous albums. catfoodcanopener Here, we traverse a different path, away from his unique percussion while still experiencing the same debonair, transcending our expectations of his sound. Suffice to say, Amon Tobin's elegant music exists beyond any competition.

Tobin accepted the compliment a little bashfully, and explained that during production of his last album, 2011's ISAM, he became preoccupied with technicalities. This disclosure didn't come as a big surprise. ISAM was an album to be admired rather than enjoyed. Its sheer precision and dexterity were often spectacular, but the demands it placed on the listener were equally powerful. It's worth emphasising something here: Fear In A Handful Of Dust is a very approachable Amon Tobin record. It is highly unconventional, full of alien timbres and strange logic. But, as was the case with much of his music in the past couple decades, you don't need to be in a specific kind of mood to enjoy it. To call it ambient would be misleading, but the album does allow you to slip immediately into a similar embrace. Perhaps Tobin's biggest accomplishment is that he mostly achieves this through tone and texture alone.

The album takes you from moments of catharsis to moments of total anxiety, with a looming sense of claustrophobia that oozes through the album’s bottom-layer. While it’s hard to compare Tobin’s projects, Fear in a Handful of Dust is a perfectly-placed follow-up to ISAM. It seems eight years has done Tobin well, giving him enough space and time to really ponder his own artistry in a way that he can reflect progress to himself and to his followers. Amon Tobin is a master of creating a chilling, deeply felt musical experience, and anyone who tends to turn a blind eye to electronic music should approach this wonderful album with an open mind. It's time well-spent. The mood of Fear in a Handful of Dust conjures all sorts of imagery, especially of the mysterious. Amon Tobin’s evolution as a writer and producer is felt, having some of the most engaging and depthful moments of his career.

These are highly intricate electro-acoustic pieces that bring to mind composers like Morton Subotnick and György Ligeti rather than any of Tobin's former labelmates. On selections like "Vipers Follow You," tactile plucked strings are set against buzzes and hums; they're suddenly reversed halfway through, creating a bizarre push-and-pull effect. Freeformed" approximates the vigorous crunch of Tobin's drill'n'bass days without using drums
