For the ninth volume of FRKWYS, a music and film series pairing contemporary artists with those that may have preceded them in style and, or approach, Sun Araw and M. Geddes Gengras meet legendary dub reggae group The Congos in St. Catherine, Jamaica and create the full-length album, ICON GIVE THANK. In conjunction, RVNG will release ICON EYE, a feature film documenting the young musicians’ time spent living and learning The Congos way. More info at: shop. released April 17, 2012.
Album · 2012 · 7 Songs. The product of a whirlwind 10-day recording session, Icon Give Thank is a startling mélange of fractured, murky instrumentals and gorgeous vocal harmonies, whose very existence testifies to the massive influence that The Congos’ masterpiece Heart of the Congos (produced by Lee Perry) has had on contemporary music. Though none of the selections here could properly be characterized as reggae, all of Icon Give Thank-from the woozily synth-dusted nyabinghi of Invocation to the ecstatic incantations of Happy Song"-is deeply indebted to the singular aesthetic of Heart of the Congos

You can trace the inspiration for this ninth volume of the FRKWYS series - the RVNG Intl. label's matching of "contemporary artists with those that may have preceded them in style and/or approach" - back to the 1977 album Heart of the Congos, where the roots reggae harmonies of the Congos met the dub experimentation of Lee Perry, and with legendary results. Here avant-garde post-rockers Sun Araw and M. Geddes Gengras take Perry's place without trying to replace him, and the results are trippy, tropical, and - best of all - full of life.
In the mid-1990s, The Congos reformed, with Myton and Burnett joined by Lindburgh Lewis, several albums following in subsequent years. In 2005 Myton recorded Give Them the Rights with a host of backup singers and star session players such as Sly and Robbie and Earl "Chinna" Smith, very much in the spiritual 70s roots vein . FRKWYS Vol. 9: Icon Give Thank (2012), RVNG Intl – with Sun Araw and M. Morning Star (2018), Lost Ark Music – with Pura Vida.

Happy Song - Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras & The CongosVia SoundCloud. By the mid 1970s, Lee "Scratch" Perry's Black Ark Studios in Jamaica was conjuring unequivocal reggae albums (not to mention singles and special dub plates for soundsystem battles) at a possessed rate. And then there was the epochal Heart of the Congos, the 1977 album cut by the Rastarian duo of the same name. Ashanti" Roy Johnson and Cedric Myton formed as a vocal duo, but to their already celestial vocal harmonies (perhaps if Curtis Mayfield and Barry Gibb had intermingled their throats), Scratch added the thunderous baritone of Watty Burnett to the Heart mix, which at times also included the harmonized mewl of a zombie cow. Now is not the place to unpack the majesty that is Heart of the Congos (where a song like "Ark of the Covenant" sounds exactly like that).
