Apparently he imagined he could be the second coming of Mozart, when in reality, his "concert version" of Messiah sounds like the second coming of Sir Eugene Goossens Handel - Messiah, Vyvyan · Sinclair · Vickers · Tozzi · Royal PO · Beecham. In an apparent act of unbridled hubris, Sir Andrew has beefed up the orchestrations of Handel's masterwork with brass, tambourine, cymbals, drum, and winds which in effect strips away all the lightness and clarity of Messiah, and turns it into a wall of sound not unlike Phil Spector's more outrageous productions .
Handel’s immortal oratorio is played and sung with matchless spirit by the TSO and friends! This whole album was an afterthought - Procol Harum had been invited to play a concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Da Camera Singers in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in August of 1971, at the tail-end of their last tour with Robin Trower in the lineup. Ironically, the success of the LP also left Procol Harum's image slightly askew, with the presence of the orchestra and choir and the selection of songs, from the most ambitious part of the band's repertory, all combining to present the group as more of a progressive rock act than they actually were.
