The Long and Short of It is a 2003 short film directed, co-written and produced by Sean Astin. The five-minute film was shot in Wellington, New Zealand in a single day when the cast and crew of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers had reunited to shoot pick-ups. It debuted on the DVD release of The Two Towers on August 26, 2003, and was an official entry at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival.

In 2015, they released the triple-LP Infinity Machines, a psych-jazz bad trip of Herculean proportions. Naturally, their new record mixes things up again. Paddy Shine: I'm surprised it went down as well as it did because it's quite a difficult album to take in. There's so much of it and the tracks are ten, fifteen minutes long. I just wish we could sell more of them, that's all. All ten people really liked it! Did its reception take Gnod to another level? Shine: Not at all, no.
The many members of the Gnod diaspora have further broadened the collective's palette in recent years, with the Tesla Tapes label putting out a wide range of garotting experimentalism, key members Chris Haslam and Paddy Shine spreading noisy techno vibrations as Dwellings and Druss, and the Gnod-associated Tombed Visions label headed by Gnod's sax-player David McLean firing out slabs. In the final couple of minutes, it all eventually falters, dismantling into short-circuiting stabs, bleeps and buzzes, finally dissolving entirely on a fade out.
For the final five readings, I expressly chose short works-pieces that could be read in one sitting-perhaps even during class. At least, that way, my students would have read something as opposed to nothing, I reasoned. The final five works were: The Narrow Road of the Deep North, by Matsuo Basho; The Vindication of the Rights of Woman, by Mary Wollstonecraft; Arthur Rimbaud Poems; Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz Poems, and Girl, by Jamaica Kincaid, which is one, page-long sentence. Of the aforementioned, The Narrow Road is the longest, but it still only measures 22 pages in our anthology . Out of the final four, all the rest number only a few pages each-literally a few. And Girl, as I mentioned earlier, is a page long. We can read the entire work in class. Of course, my students liked this very much.
