Franz Schubert composed his Piano Sonata in A minor, D. 784, in February, 1823; it was not published until 11 years after his death (as Opus 143). Four years had passed since he last turned out a work in the genre, and nearly every aspect of his life and music had changed considerably and irrevocably during the interval. Schubert had contracted syphilis in 1822, and during the early months of the following year he was largely confined to his father's house in the hope that his ravaged health might be salvaged
Radu Lupu is one of our greatest contemporary pianists. He works within a relatively narrow range on recordings (although he plays a greater variety in concert) and makes only a few of them. But as a player of music from Beethoven to Brahms-and especially of Schubert-he has made some of the best piano CDs in the catalog. His playing here is simply exquisite. The lighthearted D. 664 sounds carefree and charming, while the deep emotionalism of Schubert's last Piano Sonata (D. 960) is extremely convincing and affecting here.

Franz Schubert's Piano Sonata in A minor, D 784 (posthumously published as Op. 143), is one of Schubert's major compositions for the piano. Schubert composed the work in February 1823, perhaps as a response to his illness the year before. It was however not published until 1839, eleven years after his death. It was given the opus number 143 and a dedication to Felix Mendelssohn by its publishers
