Another emphatic, powerful and technically excellent production from Peter Hammill. More rocky than PH7 or Silent Corner and the Empty Stage, less techno than Sittings Targets, this recording smooths a path between the '70s and the '80s.

I'm damn sure Bowie copied a lot out of that geezer, John Lydon, 1977. Hammill had often seemed to be ahead of the curve. The almost prescient ‘Nadir’s Big Chance’ in 1975 had anticipated punk rock and by 1978 Hammill had already incorporated electronic music on his transitional ‘The Future Now’. By 1980 Hammill was fully ensconced in the possibilities provided by electronics and the release of ‘The Black Box’ marked a notable chapter in his musical evolution. Hammill’s music had always had a dark edge and ‘The Black Box’ is no exception

Softly, the angels sing their time and space refrain: There's something in everything if you can only pin down its name Aerobatic thoughts at the back of my mind - Is it nothing but the looping line we all follow? Nothing but the spiral twist of DNA?
