Tongues captures the third studio meeting between veteran percussionist Steve Reid and Kieran Hebden - the questing London laptop artist perhaps better known by his recording alias, Four Tet. At first glance, it’s a pretty unconventional pairing for Reid, who’s primarily an ensemble player – he made his recording debut hitting the skins on Martha and the Vandella’s Motown classic ‘'Dancing In The Streets'’, and he’s since played with figures including Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, and Sun Ra. But while Hebden is just one man, his ambitions have always extended further
Steve Reid (January 29, 1944 – April 13, 2010) was an American jazz drummer who played with a wide range of artists including Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, James Brown, Fela Kuti and Sun Ra, and as a session drummer for Motown. Born in the South Bronx, Reid picked up drumming at 16 and in the same period his family moved to Queens, New York, three blocks away from John Coltrane. Tongues is a 2007 album by Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid. The Sun Never Sets" – 5:50 (Hebden/Reid). Brain" – 3:48 (Hebden/Reid). Our Time" – 5:04 (Hebden/Reid). People Be Happy" – 4:42 (Hebden/Reid).
Play full-length songs from Tongues by Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid on your phone, computer and home audio system with Napster. The follow-up to their two Exchange Session discs, 2007's Tongues finds Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid continuing to refine their unique musical dialogue. Again, the tools couldn't be simpler (or perhaps more complicated): Reid, a veteran sideman of Miles and Fela, lays down rock-steady grooves that bristle with improvisatory tangents, while Hebden carries over the folky (and freaky) loops and samples from his Four Tet project. This time, the jams are shorter - some even approaching actual "songs. Latest albums by Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid. The Sun Never Sets (Holden Remix).
Veteran free jazz drummer Steve Reid has one of the most remarkable CVs in the history of popular music. He made his recording debut on the original recordings of Tamla classics 'Heatwave' and 'Dancing in the Street'. After playing with the Harlem Apollo house band under the direction of Quincy Jones, he went on to join forces with Fela Kuti in Nigeria, before returning to America, serving a couple of years in prison for conscientious objection to the Vietnam War, and setting up his own independent label. Well, there has always been a free jazz drumming element to Kieran Hebden's music, as admirers of the loping percussive clatter of Four Tet's last album Everything Ecstatic will already be aware. And Hebden's guest slot on last year's excellent Steve Reid Ensemble album Spirits Walk (Soul Jazz) successfully explored some of the possibilities for laptop/live jazz overlap.
