The High Llamas are not a band that has ever put a lot of stock in change. Each record since the brilliant Gideon Gaye has been a near carbon copy of the last, an enjoyable copy but still nothing that different. That being said, their seventh album does represent a rather dramatic shift in the High Llamas' sound
Angel Delight is the sixth album by the British folk-rock band Fairport Convention. This was the first Fairport Convention album without guitarist Richard Thompson, and the lineup consisted of Simon Nicol (guitar, vocals) (the only original group member), Dave Swarbrick (violin, vocals), Dave Pegg (bass, vocals), and Dave Mattacks (drums)
We can't deliver down the Walworth river.
The Llamas return with their most beautiful album yet. Exit Electronic, Enter Acoustic. Emphasizing stringed instruments, the crisp arrangements allow Beet, Maize & Corn to be simultaneously lush and sparse, grand and subtle. Some more adjectives: Gorgeous, natural, organic, sincere. I first heard The High Llamas' Beet, Maize and Corn after it flew into my mail box some time in 2003. I'm not good with dates. I remember falling in love with its simplicity and seeming austerity - after the gilded, rich albums they had made during the '90s, this was a quieter, statelier Llamas, painting from an autumn, auburn palette. They were now singing of the Walworth district, the Alexandra Line, the "˜Bridge Street step", and signing together, whether down the local or around Van Dyke Parks's piano.
