Constantines was formed in Guelph by Steve Lambke, Bryan Webb, Doug MacGregor, and Dallas Wehrle in 1999, following the break-up of Webb and MacGregor's emotional hardcore band Shoulder. Their style has been described as "art-punk", and they have been compared to bands like The Clash, Fugazi, Bruce Springsteen, The Replacements, and Nick Cave From their hometown of Guelph the band. Tournament of Hearts (Three Gut Records) – September 27, 2005, (Sub Pop Records) - October 11, 2005. Kensington Heights (Arts & Crafts) – April 15, 2008.

Every Constantines release from their 2001 self-titled debut to a pair of EPs to 2003's Shine a Light, was the stuff of thumbtacked liner notes on bedroom doors, worn and threadbare t-shirts, frayed patches sewn on backpacks and jackets- nay, tattoos. They stole brazenly from heroes of dinosaur rock while dressing down their idol culture in their lyrics and demeanor, and reconstructed their music to a desperate beat. It was enough to make you believe rock and roll was a dead horse worth flogging. No doubt that the best halves of this and Tournament of Hearts would equal a breakthrough album for the group, but taken as a whole, Kensington Heights sounds like a decisive break in the band's stride. What lingers after it's done, if not the songs, is how comfortably the group has slid into this lower gear.

Kensington Heights is the Constantines' first album for the respected Canadian imprint Arts & Crafts, and, unfortunately, it's also the first of their albums that doesn't improve upon what they've done before.

On their fourth LP, Kensington Heights, the Constantines make a concerted effort, on the album’s heavier tracks, to harness that onstage energy. The grimy, hard-worn aggression and dynamic drama of the first three tracks, Hard Feelings, Million Star Hotel, and Trans Canada, set the bar high in that regard. What is difficult to discern in Webb’s vocal delivery is made up for by tasteful, but heavy, blankets of guitar. The songs are straightforward, explosive, and, most important, don’t sacrifice the plaintive, emotional current - angry here, desperate there - coursing through

Kensington Heights, like its predecessor, isn't as fiery as the best moments on the band's inconsistent breakthrough, 2003's "Shine a Light," but the Constantines still deliver bedrock strength and eternal-flame passion. 80. If "Tournament Of Hearts" lacked consistency and focus, Heights feels like a fully realized artistic statement. Welcome back, Constantines. Even if Kensington Heights is the Constantines' least satisfying album, the band's sound is never less than mighty; it's just disappointing how easy it is to let so many songs here fade into the background.
