The Classic Collaborations: 1953 – 1963.

Miles Davis Volume 2 refers to two separate but related entities. The first is a Miles Davis studio album released by Blue Note Records as a 10-inch LP, as BLP 5022 in 1953. The six tracks from this LP plus five alternate takes were released on CD in 1990 and remastered with restored artwork in 2001.

Their first album together, Miles Ahead (Columbia, 1957), saw Davis play flugelhorn while fronting a group of 19 musicians, which included Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Art Taylor and Lee Konitz. The album was among the most acclaimed recordings to ever utilise Third Wave - the blending of jazz, classical and world music in a continuous flow - and was hailed as a masterpiece by critics. This collection brings together nine albums from the early part of Miles Davis' lengthy career and highlights the great man's impact on the jazz genre.

Miles Davis Volume 1 refers to two separate but related entities. The title was originally used for the first in a pair of compilation albums of recordings made by Miles Davis in 1952, 1953 and 1954, released in 1956 (and reissued many times) as BLP 1501 on the Blue Note Records label.

The album found Davis making a transition to his next great group, of which Carter, Hancock, and Williams would be members. It was another pop chart entry that earned 1963 Grammy nominations for both Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Soloist or Small Group and Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Large Group. The Classic Collaborations:. Young Man With the Horn, Vol. 2.

Overall, this version of the Miles Davis Quintet serves as an interesting footnote in the gradual emergence of the second quintet, but is most memorable for Feldman's compositional contributions, which would remain in the repertoire for the next year or so, and for the introduction of Carter and, to a lesser extent, Coleman. The first half of disc two documents the May session that would yield the second side of the Seven Steps to Heaven album.
