To follow up a classic like "The Documentary" with not only one but two albums, The Game does hip-hop a favor with this sequel. Throughout the the LP's discs The Game takes all listeners on a trip through California recounting tales of his past and present whilst allowing his OGs and homies to take a seat in his '64 and come along for the ride. "The Documentary 2" is a menacing record at it's best, as Game takes on N.O.R.E.'s cape and cowl and becomes a "super thug" of sorts constantly shouting out his gang as well as others made famous in Los Angeles. Whether it be on a Preem instrumental or one of Quik's , alongside members of N.W.A. or Black Hiiipy , Game keeps his flag out for display through both parts of this epic. This non-give a fuckery in the delivery evokes that of an '05 Game as he runs laps around old vestiges from his debut like on album highlight "From Adam" where he revisits the bars and story he laid on "Start From Scratch" or closing out the record with an ode to his son on "Like Father Like Son II", flipping the instrumental of the original. except instead of having Busta on the hook, solely, Game's progeny joins in on the record as well. As for the drawbacks, "The Documentary" promotes gang violence in a way as if it should be honored, and being an L.A. native who survived the paranoia of the "100 Days, 100 Nights", gang culture from living off Crenshaw/Slauson, and all that, I was disappointed to hear Game more so not evolve in his attitude on gang culture and the overall stupidity of the whole thing, but as Schoolboy states on the E side, "Gang Bang Anyway" right? Also, all those R&B features ... I was thankful that the first "Documentary" just had Mary J. , Faith , and Nate Dogg on it; this was just too much. I mean Jelly Roll and Paak served a purpose on their respective tracks (i.e. creams of this compilation's crop "Hashtag" and "Crenshaw") but all the other melodic features could have been cut. I put the headphones on for emcee's, not crooners. Just as well, to make room for the crooning, it appears that emcee's like Kanye West and Q-Tip ("Mula" , "Circles") got cut short on their verses which makes no sense for a double album. And "Life" is bonus track material, it does not serve it's purpose well as an album closer. With all of that on the scales if you wan't to take a trip through the gangbanging side of Los Angeles with The Game hopping over production by some of hip hop's greatest, then "The Documentary 2/2.5" is well worth your ear.
