This is the first studio album made by the beautiful group from New Zealand in 2005. I do not own any kind of rights upon this material, neither audio nor video. You need good bass sound system to really appreciate this music. Tracklist: 1 - Ernie 00:00 2 - Cay's Crays 07:16 3 - This Room 14:24 4 - Ray Ray 19:26 5 - Dark Days 27:06 6 - Flashback 33:44 7 - Roady 40:16 8 - Wandering Eye 47:25 9 - Del Fuego 57:15 10 - Hope Tkm 1:02:40. Early UB40 and Thievery Corporation had a love child, and its name was Fat Freddys Drop ❤❤❤❤❤❤. LP (12" album, 33 rpm). Fat Freddy's Drop Format: Vinyl. Based on a True Story. Based on a True Story was the first studio produced album by New Zealand group Fat Freddy's Drop. It was recorded in Wellington and released on the band's own label, The Drop. Based on a True Story utilized the band's trademark dub, reggae, soul and funk influenced sound, and has been successful both in terms of sales and of critical reception. The album followed years of regular touring within New Zealand, a live album, several singles, and appearances on numerous compilation albums in New Zealand and internationally.

The debut album from Fat Freddy's Drop was originally issued on the band's own Drop label in its native New Zealand, where the disc promptly shipped gold and gained notoriety as the first indie album ever to hit number one on that country's pop charts. It ended up spending 42 weeks in the Top Ten. So expectations were high for the . issue of Based on a True Story on the Kartel label, and the album doesn't disappoint.

Released on their own label, Based On A True Story has been a massive success in their antipodean homeland. This gentlehybridisation is one of the joys of their music; the clear presence of modern dance developments, informing a heartily retro approach. Producer Fitchie constructs the beats and bassline bedrock of each number on his sampling equipment, then invites the Drop's rich and creamy horn section to lay down their harmonious textures, whilst Dobie Blaze moves through. Their live set recreates this sound perfectly, and is to be recommended - as is this album - most strongly. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Licence.

Fat Freddy’s Drop was born in the melting pot of the arts scene in Wellington back in 2001. The seven-piece toured frequently, funded their own record label, and released a live album during their first year together. In May 2005, Based on a True Story graced the charts for the first of its 107 weeks in our Top 40, eventually selling 105,000 units (seven times platinum in NZ) and garnering various admirable accolades; New Zealand’s first independent release to hit number one and the country’s second greatest selling album

Based on a True Story" is my favourite album for the last . years now. It is soulful dub/ reggae! The tracks slowly evolve on laidback rhythms and beats. I was first introduced to Fat Freddy's Drop by a track of theirs on a Jazzanova remix album - no better introduction, I assure you. They advertise themselves as a "dub funk jam band," and their debut album, Based on a True Story, certainly soaks in the dub magic: the reverb, the syncopated beats, the laconic vocals. greatr! Cry Baby Jazz Dub. I can not believe this is real! is one of the biggest inspirations of our band.

I can confirm, bought mine at a gig november 2015 fresh from a sealed carton, and has the same "issues" :-) Maybe it's on purpose, as they throw together all tracks live anyway ;-)But who cares, just groove with it!

My first review has to be for this album! Because - simply put - it is a true masterpiece!"Based on a True Story" is my favourite album for the last 2.5 years now. It is soulful dub/ reggae! The tracks slowly evolve on laidback rhythms and beats. Some tracks have a little funky touch. The horns played here perfectly blend into the song. Not like these cheesy elements, trumpets tend to be sometimes. Warm bass and melodies! And then that voice!Joe Dukie has that, what you call in german a "voice of a century". His singing gives me shivers! The lyrics are interesting and spreading positive vibes ("what's the world without soul?" - Ray Ray / "something mystic in the soul connection, something magic in your misty eyes" - Flashback)! Music for the Soul! Music for the Heart!

I was first introduced to Fat Freddy's Drop by a track of theirs on a Jazzanova remix album -- no better introduction, I assure you. They advertise themselves as a "dub funk jam band," and their debut album, _Based on a True Story_, certainly soaks in the dub magic: the reverb, the syncopated beats, the laconic vocals. "This Room" starts off with some tichy percussion, while "Ray Ray" indulges the ultra-chill side of things, dipping a toe into R&B before segueing into an arch, stripped-down dub. This musical bait-and-switch happens again with "Dark Days," which start off almost folksy before it begins to bop along. I wonder how much of this morphing is a result of their jam band philosophy? In any case, it keeps the tracks interesting. The female vocals on "Roady" add an exciting dash of texture, while "Del Fuego" doesn't exhibit much fire, but instead opts for more introspection. And "Hope" rounds out the album on that same mellow note, touching on gospel elements with its lingering Rhodes chords.
