The 1970 entry in Billboard's ongoing year-by-year retrospective is notable for its inclusion of three undisputed Motown classics - Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "Tears of a Clown," Edwin Starr's "War," and the Jackson 5's monumental "I Want You Back. The remaining tracks inevitably suffer by comparison, although Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" and the Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You" carry a certain nostalgic charm.

Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1971. Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1972. 1970 was an exciting and colorful year in pop culture. Prowling the streets in my used yellow Mustang convertible, I was ready to rock. In 1970 I thought it was totally mystic and heavy, especially those psychedelic acid-rock guitar sounds. I also liked Shocking Blue's "Venus", an unusual bluesy rock track which became a big dance hit when covered by Bananarama in the 80's. Published 6 months ago.
1970 may have marked a new decade, at least on the calendar, but as you'll see in the below list of 1970's Best Rock Albums, it was still pretty much the '60s musically. A few new names surface here and there, but for the most part, the year was dominated by many of the previous decade's biggest artists, including the Doors, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Rock 'n' roll would just have to wait a year or two for the next step in its evolution. Next: 1971's Best Rock Albums.
