Refined Elegant Gentle Light Sophisticated Calm/Peaceful Reserved. The Modern Jazz Quartet. This is an unusual record in The Modern Jazz Quartet's discography for it matches The MJQ (vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Connie Kay) with an all-star big band that is comprised of a dozen horns and guitarist Howard Collins. Unfortunately the orchestra (which has a pretty impressive lineup) is used exclusively for backup of the rhythm section and none of the horns have any solos . feat: All Star Jazz Band.
The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was a jazz combo established in 1952 that played music influenced by classical, cool jazz, blues and bebop. For most of its history the Quartet consisted of John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (double bass), and Connie Kay (drums). The group grew out of the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie's big band from 1946 to 1948, which consisted of Lewis and Jackson along with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke.

There is undoubtedly a statistician somewhere in the jazz world who will note that the Modern Jazz Quartet, after a dozen years of recording, has never before performed with a band of standard brass/reed/rhythm pm portions. This recording is thus something of a debut; it also verifies what most jazz fans might have predicted: John Lewis can write into a score which combines the . with a big band the same buoyant themes and supporting harmonies which have imparted to the Quartet itself distinction in ensemble performance and a setting for incandescent solos by the individual members.
